WOMAN
Did you know women live longer than men by roughly six years, according to the CDC? AMC Disclaimer: I don’t love revealing that fact.
There are several scientific theories that explain why women live longer than men, but there is only one place in the world where men and women live into their hundreds at an equal rate. It’s a Blue Zone called Sardinia, Italy.
Susan Pinker, a developmental psychologist and journalist, writes about social science. Way before the pandemic, she decided to research the science and habits of the small, mountainous village in Sardinia, Italy where these centenarians are living. Her Ted Talk, “The secret to living longer may be your social life,” revealed fascinating insights about building relationships and community, and the importance of interacting face-to-face. She believes the deeply rooted sense of community in Sardinia is the leading reason men and women are living into their hundreds at an equal rate.
This makes scientific sense, considering the U.S. Surgeon General declared an Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation less than a year ago.
Pinker’s research sent me down quite a rabbit hole. Years later, I’m still in it. It’s the primary reason I created Anna Michele Communications and the AMC 3C’s Mindful Communication Model. Don’t we all want to crack the code on longevity?
It’s common knowledge, primally speaking, that men are the hunters and women are the gatherers. “Woman, in her many roles, cooperates with man to create the uniquely flexible and interdependent social organization of our species,” a quote from the book, “Woman the Gatherer.”
Scientifically, it’s in a woman’s nature to build community (and so much more). Furthermore, you can’t have community without impactful communication. There is endless research that validates women more effectively process emotions to strategically communicate when measured against men. There’s also evidence that this is why women live longer.
Mindfully, think about how women, community and communication symphonically weave together. AMC Disclaimer: It is not my intention to anger man. It is my intention to increase awareness and broadcast the following call to action:
What if the business leader majority, nearly 70% male-dominated, placed higher value on women? And second, what if the male-dominated corporate world were more conscious to this truth and viewed the workplace as a high-functioning community, and spent more time collaborating with female leaders, to implement effective communication strategies? Hmm… according to the data (a word we love so much), it would be a grand slam for everyone. (*Minus certain egos). Yikes!
This week’s AMC impactful takeaway-
Innovate, man. Make space for woman. It’s time to recognize and act on the primal power of woman and her exceptional and innate contributions to business success and longevity. It is woman, who by nature, generates prosperous environments that foster growth and success. It’s time for the 70% at the top to reprioritize a woman’s role in business longevity, Mindfully Speaking.
At Anna Michele Communications we provide research, insights and practices that prove trust, earned through effective communication, leads to authentic connection, which then leads to prosperous business longevity in community. This doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a mindful investment that takes time, expertise and requires leaders to examine how they view diversity, equity and inclusion.
I love March for so many reasons:
Obviously, spring is around the corner
It’s my Grandma Pepi’s birthday month
It’s National Women’s History Month
The call to to promote women isn’t something I invented in this newsletter. I’m aware. AMC wants to work with powerful leaders who respect the dignity and worth of all people, but are particularly interested in closing the massive gender gap in the corporate world.
