sleepwalking

Is human decency now a traditional formality? You know, the type of tradition only practiced on special occasions. Great discussion, right? Put a pot of coffee on for this one, or do we not have time?

I feel like a number in society. That’s not how I want to feel. That’s definitely not how AMC does business.

I’ve heard the term “sleepwalking” organically used in a lot of conversations lately, but it’s not what you think. “Sleepwalking” is now used to describe the current human social condition. At AMC we identify it as a communication disconnectivity crisis that is unfolding in the nation and world. It’s everywhere too; at home, at school, at work. You know what I’m talking about and pardon the drama, but it scares the hell out of me especially in my role as an academic and professor. Apparently, it also scares the U.S. Surgeon General.

In an AMC translation my clients, colleagues and friends are using the term sleepwalking as a way to describe these painful observations or missed moments that would otherwise contribute to connection in the genuine human exchange. We’ve traditionally called these moments, decency and decency has everything to do with communication or lack of.

In a brief AMC overview, these small moments of decency are the foundational pieces of trust that build relationships and convert us into longevity communities. As I’ve previously written, community is our lead reason for survival. At the core of what we do, AMC successfully works to generate authentic community in businesses and organizations to generate productivity and growth.

Through research, I discovered the reason for this tragic communication breakdown in “decency” is a widespread lack of consciousness. The “how did we get here” is what AMC presents in our customized masterclass programming when we work with our clients. We then create customized solutions to increase communication systems that strengthen professional communities.

At AMC we want to educate your teams. We want to generate authentic “decency” once again, because scientifically speaking, it’s what generates good business and success.

For instance, this week I showed a recently produced commercial by insurance company, “Amica,” to my business communication students, watch video here. The commercial is titled, “More Human.” In one minute, the insurance company tells the story of a society so digitally distracted that we’re subconsciously “forgetting” how to be human. The commercial sent shivers down my spine because sadly, it’s true.

In the words of Charles Feltman, “Trust is choosing to make something important to you, vulnerable to the actions of someone else.” Doesn’t that sound like something we need more of? Doesn’t it just sound, decent?

I don’t know about you, but at AMC we’re tired of living like Pavlov’s Dog. We’re also tired of being a number. We’re ready to work with leaders and innovators whom are tired of  “sleepwalking.” Pardon the pun.

Raise your coffee cup to trust, consciousness, and decency!
