Trust me

The concept of trust is deeply philosophical, profound and complex, am I right? The practice of trust is mystifying to me. If you research the word, trust, a combination of vague and also niche words or definitions claim to define the term, further complicating my understanding of it. At AMC we prefer the definition of trust, by trust expert, Charles Feltman:

“Trust is choosing to make something important to you, vulnerable to the actions of someone else.” -Charles Feltman.

Allow that definition some time to sink in. Read it again and again, if need be. Most of you know that I teach collegiate journalism and communication courses, but I start every semester exploring trust with Feltman’s definition. In addition, I read it and practice it every day, stumbling along the way, of course.

At Anna Michele Communications, I’m highlighting trust this week because it’s important for you to know that trust is the root of all success in anything, but specifically in business relations. We know you know this, but think of all the broad communication challenges we face in 2024 that generate trust depletions and ultimately impact our social or communicative behaviors in business (in society and in our homes). *If I listed them we’d be here for awhile.

In our customized Anna Michele Communications Masterclass Programming, we work with teams in every industry first to philosophically explore trust. We explore the lofty concept of truth from all angles. For instance, in order for authentic trust to exist in any organization, one must internally audit one’s ability to self-trust. Next, we explore our ability to operate in trust with others, then we better understand how to earn trust from other people. Disclaimer, this is a life-long practice but AMC provides the tools to successfully begin this lengthy journey.

As you can imagine, this particular masterclass takes time, deep group discussion and willingness. I want to work with companies and organizations that are willing to invest in their teams from a deeper and more impactful place, to earn and maintain genuine trust. This is the beginning of exceptional, mindful communication.

This week, AMC asks you to mindfully begin exploring the concept and practices of trust. I invite you to quiet down your mind so you can conduct an internal audit. Here’s a research tool to begin…

I live and teach by award-winning researcher, Brené Brown’s, “Anatomy of Trust.” In the following acronym, BRAVING, Brown breaks down the complex word, trust, by identifying all elements that complete the concept of trust, or “Choosing to make something important to you, vulnerable to the actions of someone else.” -Feltman.

Brené Brown’s Anatomy of Trust: BRAVING

  • Boundaries

  • Reliability

  • Accountability

  • Vault

  • Integrity

  • Non-judgement

  • Generosity

When I work with teams and leaders, we deeply dive into the meanings of every word listed above. With these words and knowing how they relate to trust research, we can choose articulate language that more clearly identifies our trust challenges with colleagues, which enhances our ability to clearly communicate misunderstandings and generate more trusting relationships.

AMC Food for Thought: We also believe this week in particular is an exceptional time to assess our trust practices as Black History month begins. For instance, how important is it to learn more about a culture you weren’t raised in or aren’t fully acquainted with, to generate a deeper understanding or to deepen your empathy level for cultures or people outside of your comfort communities? Last reminder, “Trust is choosing to make something important to you, vulnerable to the actions of someone else.” -Feltman.
